Different Types of Massage Therapy and its Benefits

Massage therapy is one of the most healthy approaches Complementary Alternative Medicine. It works around the theory of applying various different techniques of massage for muscle manipulation. It improves a person's body function, speed up the healing process, slow down the muscles and neuron's reflexes, makes blood flow better in all the body parts and thus enhances the overall well being of a person. Massages relaxes the tensions on all muscles and thus relaxes a person thus lowering the blood pressure of a person.

The application of friction leads to pressure, vibration and tension to the various tissues and muscles that are targeted by the therapy. Targeted body parts can include the patient's connective tissues, ligaments, tendons, muscles, or joints. Massage therapy can also be performed with the use of mechanical massage equipments or through the manual usage of the therapist's fingers, hands, elbows, forearm, knees, and feet.

Health problems that can be cured with Massage Therapy

A professional healthcare provider that knows his or her way with massage techniques, along with massage therapy's advantages and disadvantages, should be the one to do this, and they are called registered massage therapists. The health conditions that can be cured are the following:

  • Arthritis, tendonitis, and other inflammatory disorders
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Sprains, strains, muscle spasms, and other sport-related injuries

Various Massage Techniques and Their Purposes

  • Acupressure, which is a technique originating from the traditional Chinese medicine. It is the application of pressure, either through needles or hands, to various acupuncture points located and scattered in the body which are also called Meridians.

  • Balinese massage uses gentle strokes that are enough to build a relaxing and calming atmosphere to a patient. It utilizes kneading and stroking, among others.

  • Deep tissue massage, which is designed to decrease the tension building in the muscles located below the deep surface muscles. It is recommended to patients suffering continuous pain, who are involved in extensive physical activity, and who have various physical injuries.

  • Reflexology massage, which is similar to acupuncture, believes that reflexes are located, scattered and grouped in the different sites of hands and feet, and that each reflex is designated to a certain organ and gland of the body.

  • Sports or Manual Therapy, which is a physical treatment made to treat the disability and pain of a client. It consists of techniques that manipulate the various joints and muscles of the body.
  • Swedish Massage Therapy- This is the most common type of massage therapy in the United States. It is also known as Swedish massage or simply massage therapy. Massage therapists use long smooth strokes, kneading, and circular movements on superficial layers of muscle using massage lotion or oil.
  • Aromatherapy Massage is a therapy with the addition of one or more scented plant oils called essential oils to address specific needs.The massage therapist can select oils that are relaxing, energizing, stress-reducing, balancing, etc. One of the most common essential oils used in aromatherapy massage is lavender.Aromatherapy massage is particularly suited to stress-related conditions or conditions with an emotional component.
  • Hot Stone Massage-Heated, smooth stones are placed on certain points on the body to warm and loosen tight muscles and balance energy centers in the body.The massage therapist may also hold stones and apply gentle pressure with them. The warmth is comforting. Hot stone massage is good for people who have muscle tension but prefer lighter massage..
  • Thai Massage aligns the energies of the body using gentle pressure on specific points. Thai massage also includes compressions and stretches.You don't just lie there--the therapist moves and stretches you into a sequence of postures. It's like yoga without doing any work. Thai massage is more energizing than other forms of massage. It is also reduces stress and improves flexibility and range of motion.
