The benefits of Aromatherapy

The name aromatherapy itself has a very calming effect on us. A room full of aromatherapy candles generates a very calm and peaceful atmosphere. These scented candles can be beneficial for relaxation purposes. Practiced even in the ancient times right from the Egyptians, who discovered the benefits of aromatherapy more than 6,000 years ago and used many different essential oils for a healing massage.

What Is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is the technique for using the essential oils or plant extracts used extensively for the treatment of many diseases and stress related conditions. Those plant extracted oils are taken from the plants and mixed with alcohol, lotion and other oils. Their main application is in oil based massage into the skin but they are also very good when they are inhaled by being sprayed into the air or through the use of aromatherapy candles. The fragrances from the aromatherapy oils work within the body. They stimulate the nerves of the nose which secrets enzymes, hormones and which changes functions of the body like lowering the pulse and reducing blood pressure. And also assist production of substances within the body that reduce pain.

Aromatherapy candles are very convenient to use. You can meditate in a room with these candles, or enjoying some music or a good book, improving your health. Each scent is going to have a specific benefit to the body

Lavender - An individual who is depressed or fatigued would appreciate the benefits of Lavender aromatherapy candles. It helps to calm a person's nerves and to relieve stress. It is also a good choice when you want to get some restful sleep.

Jasmine - The oil from the Jasmine plant has a scent that is reported to have antidepressant properties and can help you to relax.

Aromatherapy can also help with insomnia. A number of different essential oils give good results for some people including Valerian, Bergamot, Chamomile, Clary Sage, Frankincense, Jasmine, Lavender, Marjoram, Rose, Sandalwood and Ylang Ylang.

Aromatherapy can also help people to improve or stop snoring. Many people reduced snoring after using Marjoram essential oil. Marjoram oil relaxes and soothes muscles.

In case you are using oil based massages then they can be used differently. Many will need to be rubbed onto your skin. Many on the chest or below nose. Others will simply need you to inhale the aromas during the night, by putting a few drops on your pillow or even simply leaving an open container of the oil blend on a side-table beside the bed.

By using aromatherapy you can derive the following benefits

  • Enhance mood and general feeling of well-being through massage and the use of essential oils.
  • Improve blood and lymphatic circulation through massage and the use of essential oils. Depending upon the essential oils used the blood vessels will either constrict or dilate thereby raising or lowering blood pressure.
  • Balance the hormone production by the endocrine system. Essential oils such as clary sage can mimic oestrogen.
  • Strengthen the immune system by helping to kill viruses, bacteria and fungal infections.
  • Reduce pain.
  • Encourage restful sleep.
  • Improve digestion.

Some common oils and their benefits are listed below

  • Eucalyptus: for congestion/colds
  • Frankincense: for calming emotions and nightmares
  • Geranium: for menopausal problems & PMS Lemongrass; for sore or injured muscles
  • Lavender: for relaxation
  • Peppermint: for quick energy
  • Rose: a uterine tonic and aids in contractions during childbirth
  • Sandalwood: for relaxation, digestive troubles (esp. due to tension), dry skin
  • Tea Tree: a strong disinfectant, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal
