Fluorides in different forms is the most widely used substance present in toothpaste to prevent formation of cavities. Abrasives, dental polishers, constitute at least 50% of a typical toothpaste. Also a foaming agent is present which enables uniform distribution of toothpaste, 20-45% water, flavorings, some have glycerol, sorbitol, or xylitol to prevent drying, some have enamel remineralizers and some have desensitizers if you are treating for sensitive teeth.
